Meta Business Agent: AI agent for WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram
Meta Business Agent is an AI agent that replies to customers in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, recommends products from a connected catalogue, books appointments, qualifies leads and closes sales, with a handoff to a person when the business chooses. Meta launched it globally on 3 June 2026, free to get started, and on 15 September moved it into Meta One business subscriptions: Essential from $14.99 a month with more Business Agent access, Advanced from $49.99 with more responses, Expert from $149 and Max from $499 with the highest capacity. For advertisers, it is the thing that answers when a click-to-message ad opens a conversation.

What changed
Meta’s June announcement at its Conversations event in London said more than one million businesses were already using a Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger, and that there are more than one billion active business threads a day across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. The agent was opened to businesses of every size worldwide, set up “in minutes,” responding in the customer’s language and the business’s tone. Meta lists what it does: answers business-specific questions, recommends products from the catalogue, books appointments and qualifies leads, closes sales, and lets the business decide when a team member steps in. It was also expanding to Instagram, and WhatsApp was adding business discovery by name search and shared contact cards.
Two further pieces came with it. A select group of businesses on the WhatsApp Business app, Instagram Pro, Messenger and Meta Business Suite get a morning briefing on overnight chats, with a waitlist. And the Meta Business Agent Platform gives larger businesses infrastructure to build, customise and deploy the agent, connect it to hundreds of systems such as Shopify and Zendesk so it can take actions, and set enterprise controls, guardrails and measurement.
Meta said at launch that access would move into paid subscriptions “in the coming months.” The Meta One plans of 15 September are that move. Essential, from $14.99 a month, bundles presence tools, a verified badge and more Business Agent access on WhatsApp. Advanced, from $49.99, adds scheduling, exportable analytics, team access, more WhatsApp broadcast credits and more Business Agent responses. Expert from $149 and Max from $499 offer the highest feature access and agent capacity. Plans are available globally and vary by region, app and account. Meta does not state what the free level allows.
In its 3 September results post, Meta cited Movida, one of Brazil’s largest car-rental companies, which deployed the agent on WhatsApp to run the whole booking flow and reported a 54% increase in daily WhatsApp bookings in the first month versus the same period a year earlier, with 85% of conversations resolved instantly. Those are Meta case figures without a footnote. On 28 September Meta folded Business Agent into its new Meta Enterprise Platform, with no advertising detail.
Why it matters
If you run click-to-WhatsApp or Instagram message ads, the conversation after the click is where leads are won or lost, and most businesses lose them to slow replies. The agent changes the economics of that ad format: a lead-generation campaign into WhatsApp no longer depends on someone being awake. For a founder in India, Brazil or Southeast Asia, where WhatsApp is the sales channel, this is more relevant than most Ads Manager features announced this year. For ecommerce with a catalogue, the agent recommending products inside the thread turns a message ad into something closer to a shop.
The paid tiers are the catch. “More access” and “more responses” per tier means the free level has limits Meta has not published, and a message campaign that works will hit them. Our view: budget the Essential or Advanced tier as part of the campaign cost, not as a separate software decision, and judge the agent on lead quality in your CRM rather than on resolved-conversation rates. Movida’s 54% is one company in one market with Meta’s numbers; the right comparison is your own reply time and conversion rate before and after.
What to do
- Activate the Business Agent from the WhatsApp Business app or Meta Business Suite, and connect your catalogue so product recommendations come from live stock and prices.
- Write the handoff rule: which questions or intents go to a person, and within what time. Test it with the questions your ads actually generate.
- Run your existing click-to-message campaign unchanged for two weeks with the agent on, and compare reply time, qualified-lead rate and booked outcomes in your CRM against the two weeks before.
- Check the response limits of the tier you are on against your weekly lead volume before scaling spend into message ads.
- If you sell through Shopify or run support in Zendesk, assess the Business Agent Platform connectors so the agent can take actions rather than only answer.
Still unknown
Meta has not published the free tier’s response limits, exact per-tier quotas, regional pricing or the Instagram rollout timing. The Movida figures are Meta’s case numbers with no stated methodology. We have not deployed the agent on an account; the two-week comparison above is how we would evaluate it.
Frequently asked questions
What does Meta Business Agent do?
It replies to customers around the clock in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram in their language and your tone, answers questions specific to your business, recommends products from your catalogue, books appointments, qualifies leads, closes sales and hands over to a person when you decide. Meta announced the global rollout on 3 June 2026.
Is Meta Business Agent free?
Meta said getting started is free and that access would move into paid subscriptions in the coming months. On 15 September 2026 Meta One business plans launched: Essential from $14.99 a month with more Business Agent access on WhatsApp, Advanced from $49.99 with more responses, and Expert from $149 and Max from $499 with the highest capacity. Meta has not published the free tier’s limits.
Does Meta Business Agent work with click-to-WhatsApp ads?
The agent handles conversations in WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, which is where click-to-message ads send people. Meta’s announcement does not describe a specific ad setting; the agent responds in the thread the ad opens. Meta cites Movida, a Brazilian car-rental company, reporting a 54% rise in daily WhatsApp bookings in its first month with the agent.
Can larger businesses customise Meta Business Agent?
Yes. The Meta Business Agent Platform lets businesses build, customise and deploy the agent at scale, connect to systems such as Shopify and Zendesk so the agent can take actions, and set rules, guardrails and measurement. Meta announced it alongside the agent on 3 June 2026.
